Hippius Ditched IPFS and Built Its Own Storage Engine From Scratch

"We don't patch, we rebuild" — the subnet's new engine, Arion, splits data across miners so losing a third of the network still allows full reconstruction.

Hippius says it built and switched to its own trustless distributed storage engine, called Arion, after concluding IPFS wasn't the right fit for what it needed.

Arion uses a CRUSH map for shard placement, splitting data and parity shards across Hippius's Bittensor miners so that losing up to a third of the network's nodes still allows full reconstruction of the underlying data. The team's own framing of the decision: "we don't patch, we rebuild."

Hippius is also one of the seven subnets Kraken selected for its subnet alpha token listing roadmap — external validation that lands alongside a real infrastructure rebuild, not just a marketing moment.
